Every day in America thousands of people face danger, homelessness, fear, and despair because they are not getting the treatment they need for mental illness.

These people—our neighbors, family, friends and members of our communities—are locked in an endless cycle of breakdown, arrest, hospitalization & then back on the streets; facing this challenge, they struggle to find a level of normalcy in their lives.

The doctors, nurses, counselors, and law enforcement professionals who do their best are overwhelmed as they try to find help. Health professionals become frustrated as they are unable to do what is best for patients in the short term, which is a necessary first step to help them transition to a life of dignity and respect.

We spend millions of dollars of public money reacting, but important changes and new practices to address these needs on a proactive basis can provide the foundation for long-term success and a more effective use of public resources.

The Journey Back Project was created to facilitate this. Healthcare professional Kyle Carlson saw people the community often overlooks, people who just need some compassion and some practical help.  This organization is his effort to help solve this crisis.

This non-profit organization is driven by two mutually supportive missions:
  1. To raise awareness; and,
  2. To implement practical solutions to this crisis.

The Journey Back Project connects resources, support, placement services and temporary housing with the mental health patients who are in critical need of safe, reliable shelter.

This avoids the cycle of loss and provides a bridge from the temporary fix to a longer-term solution and enduring success.

Based on its twin missions above, The Journey Back Project has partnered with the Ames Productions team to create and implement a public awareness campaign that develops and facilitates the critical education & community discussion we need.

Ames Productions is producing a film to tell the stories of some of the real people looking for a path to the basic dignified life we all need, and the dedicated people who work every day to try to help them find it.

The film explores the nature and scale of the problem, the role it plays in the homelessness crisis in America, the challenges and hurdles everyone in the system faces, and—ultimately—the stories of success.

The film also explores the intricacies and challenges of Florida’s Baker Act, including a review of what the professionals—who work with it every day—would like to see change and evolve; so that the Act works better for the people it is designed to protect.

Ames Productions has successfully created community awareness programs for more than three decades.

Real—and effective—change begins with education and discussion, develops a path to practical implementation, and leads to the documenting and sharing of best practices.

Bringing communities together to solve big problems is Ames Productions’ mission.
